A Guide to Choosing and Maintaining Tropical Home Furniture
Making a Home Uniquely Yours in the Tropics
For many of us, having a home in a tropical place like Goa is a dream. After all, that’s where we envisage a perfect vacation. Living in a tropical paradise has its own unique charm, with abundant sunshine, lush greenery, and warm temperatures throughout the year. Some of us may choose holiday homes in such beauty-laden places. However, these conditions also pose specific challenges when it comes to furnishing your home. Furniture in tropical regions must withstand high humidity, intense sunlight, and the occasional heavy rain. Hence working with furniture makers like Indeva Furniture Design not only bring innovation but also choosing the right wood and finished that work best for tropical climate. Indeva, with their decades of know-how in furniture making, shares a guide to choosing and maintaining furniture for your homes in the tropics.
Understanding the Challenges of Tropical Furniture
A realization that comes quickly is that interior design and furnishing in such a climate is challenging. Here’s why:
High Humidity: Tropical places have extremely high humidity coupled with heat. Exposure to humidity causes wooden furniture to absorb moisture and swell up. This deforms the furniture and reduces its shelf life.
Monsoons and Mold: Monsoons are a prominent season in the tropics and bring challenges such as mold and mildew. Fungal growth can seep into the wood and damage it. Over time, it becomes unpleasant and unsafe to stay around such furniture.
Proximity to the Sea: If a house is located close to the sea, there are chances of furniture undergoing quicker wear and tear. Metal corrodes faster in salty ocean air, leading to rusted hinges and metal accents.
Solutions for Tropical Furniture Challenges
At Indeva, we have solutions that address these challenges and more. Now let’s explore tropical furniture options so that you can create something uniquely you.
Hardwood Furniture: People prefer natural wood furniture due to its durability and aesthetics. If one has to choose between hardwood and softwood for tropical climates, I’d say, go with the former. India is blessed with a variety, such as teak, rosewood, sal wood, white cedar, mahogany, mulberry, deodhar, neem, and jack wood. They are more durable compared to softwood and don’t undergo as much wear and tear.
Wood Finishes: Finish is the protective layer applied to wooden furniture. Regular finishes (film forming, polyurethane, marine) don’t do well in tropics. Wood expansion can cause them to crack; they need to be regularly re-applied, and some are not suitable for exteriors. Personally, my go-to choice is bio-friendly penetrating oil such as linseed and tung oil. Additives to these can also prevent mildew, UV ray damage, and more. It is great for both interior and exterior.
All-Weather Rattan Furniture: Rattan originally was available in a natural form, derived from the rattan plant. Furniture was made by weaving it in a wicker pattern. Now, one can pick unique and versatile, weather-proof rattan furniture. These are made from resin. I am sure you would have come across woven pool-side deck furniture. That is all-weather rattan. These glamorous yet hardy pieces can be found on patios, balconies, and gardens of homes and hotels.
Bamboo Furniture: Compared to traditional wooden furniture, bamboo is more adaptable to varying climate conditions. It effectively withstands moisture and heat, preventing it from expanding in high humidity or shrinking in direct sunlight, without sustaining any damage. Due to these properties, bamboo is commonly used for outdoor furniture and comes in a variety of designs and weaves.
Making Sustainable Choices
Sustainability is a growing concern, and opting for eco-friendly furniture contributes positively to the environment.
Reclaimed Wood: Furniture made from reclaimed wood not only adds a unique character to your home but also promotes recycling and reduces deforestation.
Certified Wood: Look for furniture made from FSC-certified wood to ensure responsible forest management practices.
